Reds Vs. Greens – Fifth and Final Match - 15 Feb 2008 ( Published on 18/Feb/2008 )

Genghis Khan established an empire stretching from China in the east to the shores of Atlantic Ocean in the west, the cold Siberia in the north to the wet Indian Sub-continent in the south, the largest at any time of the history, by taking around twenty five thousand kinsmen and over hundred thousand horses from one battle to another over a period of 25 years. When ever I read about his feats, I am filled with wonder. an illiterate Mongol nomad! How could he do it?

Recently I read that the desert Bedu tribes of Arabia, at one time not very far, routinely raided each other for cattle or camels, in parties of 50 or 100 strong tribesmen, covering a distance of over a 1000 miles. These small wiry men, nothing distinguishing them. Again I'm amazed considering the impossible aridity of the desert, its never-ending wilderness, a water-well or grazing for their camels at a distance of hundreds of miles from each other. how can they be so resolute?

Perhaps it is desperation, when all elements scheming against them pushing them to the wall! Perhaps it is the craving for glory to bring cheer to their dreary life.

I believe, last weekend Greens were desperate after the previous Friday drubbing by an imperious Reds. They had their back to the wall and were struggling. In desperation they brought their heads together. They schemed and resolved themselves to fight till their last man standing.

Their opponents could not guess what was coming. and JK, the unassuming Greens' captain, stood tall, his task cut to perfection.

Perhaps the Reds sensed that all is not well, the moment they saw Anil coming out to open the batting for Greens with Ameer. They worst fears came true when Anil went on to his task belting the front line bowlers with gay abandon. As expected, the outfield was damp in the morning but that was not going to hamper a cocky Anil. Two mighty sixes, the very second over of the match from the usually dependable Jay going for sixteen runs!

Damage was already done by the time Ziya managed to get him out. But reds' misery was far from over with fearsome warriors Jijo and Samad taking up the cudgel from where Anil has left it. Even Vinu shed his careful approach to rattle up runs at brisk pace. Perhaps it was a field-day for the old guard that even I too could make my presence felt with bat. Although a spate of easy run-outs hampered the Greens' march towards the end of their innings, for the Reds score of 159 was still a mountain to climb.

Reds gathered themselves and made a strong start with Sandeep leading from the front picking up every loose ball and efficiently running between the wickets. Even after fellow opener John departing early giving a tame catch to JK off Pradeep, they went on at brisk pace. But greens had better ideas and they executed it to script as JK initiated slow bowling early on to stem the flow of runs. Reward was almost immediate with Vinu clean bowling Sandeep, a rare sight sparking wild celebrations. Jay soon had to retire injuring himself. Greens truly sealed the match in their favor as Ameer cheekily dismissed Ziya -in retaliation to similar earlier dismissal of Vinod by Rojo- even before he could start.

Rest of the batting caved in with Ameer eliciting prodigal turn and a few remaining Reds running themselves out in desperation. Jay alone stood among the ruins, like the last Bedu raider fighting for honor, his lost battle to its very end.

Reds really missed the most fearsome of their lot. Who is it.Take a guess!

All drama apart, it was a greatly improved fielding display by both teams. Running between the wickets too had improved with non-strikers in general eager to give the start. It is small wonder that there were two 'Mankaded' run outs, one in each innings. May be the non-strikers were too eager and should be more restrained in the future.

Bowler stumping the non-striker before completing the bowling action is infamously attributed to Vinoo Mankad, a former Indian all-rounder who did it twice in a 1947-48 Australian tour. Although he drew flaks from the Media then, it is significant here to note that Sir Don Bradman justified Mankad's deed stating he is perfectly playing with in the rules as the non-striker stepping out is unfairly gaining an advantage. However the generally accepted practice or tradition in cricket is that such errant non-striker is warned rather than effecting a Mankaded stumping at the first instance.

Does tradition play a greater role in Cricket than any other game? I leave you to ponder on that.

As for the Captains, I should appreciate both for their efforts to start the game well on time and marshalling an excellent fielding display. Both captains batted last and did not bowl at all. Why is that? While JK, being a senior, was in charge always I was surprised to see a subdued Sherry, quite unlike him. May be he was overawed to captain all the seniors around him. Perhaps a senior captain facing a junior captain is not a great idea. Wouldn't it be better if both are either Junior or senior for a given game?

Great series indeed. I am signing off awaiting greater thrills. Is it not the game winning?

Two all; Finely poised.. So much at stake in the Fifth Game ! (Published on: 12/Feb/2008)

Great show Reds.. You have painted the Lahala red!

The significant thing about the match was that strategizing has played a major part in deciding its outcome.

I believe it was the first time in our short history that a side winning the toss elected to field. A great decision indeed, considering the dew factor, heavy ball, a wet outfield and an increased number of overs to play. The greens, despite fielding 13 players, found scoring difficult. Reds, ably assisted by two excellent catches at the boundary by Alex and a generally inspired fielding performance marshaled by John who had a good day behind the stumps, could shot out Greens for 124 runs despite conceding a huge 33 runs as extras. Greens' batting was evidently insipid at best with only Ameer, Jijo and Pradeep reaching double figures. Faisal tried to accelerate the run rate coming down the order but an unfortunate run out spoiled the party for him. Moncy returned with the best bowling effort for Reds conceding just 13 runs for his two wickets in three overs.

With Sun coming out as the morning progressed, the outfield dried up and so was the Greens run of good fortune. Reds had a much firmer ball to face when they turned up to bat. Greens' misery was further compounded by the right hand/ left hand Reds' opening pair Alex and Sandeep. Sandeep, coming in after a month long hiatus, played with poise curtailing his usual aggression. Alex, playing ever like a rampaging knight, took care of the initial thrust with a quick fire 20. Hapless Greens' new bowlers Joseph and Philip, uncomfortable with changing the line at every alternate ball, ended up conceding over 35 runs in the first 4 overs, half of it coming in the form of extras.

Anil, playing his first match in a month himself, steadied the bowling coming in at the first change and Vinu tried to bring in some cheer with two quick wickets with his intelligent variations. But on the whole it was just delaying the inevitable as the score 124 looked to be thoroughly inadequate against the determined Reds.

With a Reds' win looming in the horizon, Greens' captain Faisal tried his ace thrusting the ball to Samad expecting for a miracle over similar to last week's. But it was not to be. Reds' Captain Sia, determined not to repeat the mistakes of previous match, guided his team to an easy win hitting the winning run with relish.

Fine show indeed Reds. Sia, you can rightly be proud. more than outplayed, you have thoroughly out-thought your rivals!

Apart from the outcome, it was, in general, a stand out fielding performance by both teams. Excellent wicket keeping by Prashanth and John; two cool catches in the boundary by Alex; a stunner of a catch by Pradeep which served as some saving grace for the Greens; Ameer jumping around and bouncing on his belly a couple of times losing the ball in the process.

Good show guys!!! So much at stake in the next one!!!

Red Hawks team after defeating Green Hawks

The Reds Vs. Greens Series - 4th match, February 8, 2008

THE RED IS ALWAYS HOT

The Reds Vs. Greens Series - 3rd Match, February 1st 2008 (Published on: 5/Feb/2008)

The Third Match in the Reds Vs. Greens series was keenly anticipated by both teams after a nail-biting and dramatic last gasp win for the Greens last Friday. For the Reds, given their formidable batting line-up, last Friday was a sour pill to swallow. Both captains seem to have done their home work well. I was thoroughly surprised to receive a call early yesterday from Jijo, the Greens' captain, ensuring my availability for today and Vinod too mentioned that he'd come fairly early heeding Jijo's advise to secure the ground for us. EHCC MEDIA TEAM believe Alex, Captaining Reds, too has done his bit in that manner. It is praiseworthy that captains do take pains to build that anticipation and ensure everyone's presence so that the game starts with least hiccups. It was all the more so considering the unexpected bad weather today morning. Good job captains to start with. Good job indeed!

Greens, riding on their luck from last week, promptly won the toss and elected to bat. Ameer and Vinod put up a good show as openers, saw off the new ball battery from ever vigorous Alex and a beefed up Moncy. What is significant here is that, despite being slow runners between the wickets, both openers scored almost run a ball by actually running between the wickets, without resorting to risky big hits. That paved the way for the rest of the Greens batsmen, especially after their normally prolific Vinu and Samad fell cheaply in quick succession. Contributions from Prashanth and the new comer Mani deserve special mention.

As seen often, extras contributed the major share of runs for Greens. Reds, despite effecting three run outs were prodigal in wides, byes and overthrows. They tried 10 bowlers and Nishanth took the bowling honors giving away just 15 runs for his two wickets in two over's. Alex, Jayapradeep and Rojo too have bowled well but were unlucky at times not to get a wicket. Sia had an uncharacteristically bad day as a bowler creating a record of the sorts in number of wides conceded in his second over. In the end a score of 129 looked to be a fighting total for the Greens.

Reds openers Rojo and Moncy started sedately and Moncy tried to cut loose with an audacious six in the second over which sailed a long way over the boundary. In spite of that, the new bowl bowlers Joseph and me could bowl with discipline and the first 4 overs went for less that 15 runs.

Reds' strong middle order tried to force pace led by Sia who clobbered bulk of his runs by pulling fours and a six to the square leg region. I should note that he is fast emerging as our premier batsmen; balanced, with a sound footwork and could play shots all around the wicket with ease. John, Alex, Jayapradeep, all tried gamely but Greens held on with Joseph, Vinu, Samad, Jijo, Prashanth and Ameer taking wickets at regular intervals. I believe it was audacious batting versus disciplined bowling ably marshaled by the Greens captain.

However, the equation seven runs in the final over with Sia at stumps portended an easy win for the Reds but Samad who was rightfully entrusted with the final over had other ideas. A brilliant final over.. Greens 2-1 up, the final verdict!

Excellent team effort! Bravo Greens.. Well tried Reds.. The battle is on!
